Ex-Sheriff’s Civilian Clerk Arrested for Embezzlement
Wednesday, July 1, 2009 2:30 PM
For Immediate Release:
The Sutter County Sheriff’s department served an arrest warrant today on Lorinda
Barrera, 46 of Marysville, who is charged with embezzling funds from the Sheriff’s
Department from 2006 to 2008 totaling more than $90,000.
Barrera was a civilian clerk working in the civil division of the sheriffs department in
November of 2008 when accounting discrepancies were discovered during an internal
audit initiated by the Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators confronted Barrera with the theft in December of 2008 and Barrera was
dismissed from her job at that time and the investigation has continued. Sheriff J. Paul
Parker advised that the lengthy investigation was necessary as they had to work with the
banks to retrieve banking records as far back as possible. The Sheriff’s department also
used the services of an outside forensic auditor to assist them in this investigation.
“We are very saddened and feel betrayed that an employee who was granted public trust
violated that trust,” said Sheriff Parker.
Sheriff Parker regards any misuse or embezzlement of public funds to be the most serious
of offenses, and will vigorously investigate these crimes. Persons placed in positions of
trust in the community shall be held accountable for their actions.
