For Immediate Release:

Sutter County K-9 “Karo” and his handler Deputy Steven Traynor recently won awards
in two police dog competitions.

The first trial this year was held in Bakersfield on June 4th, 5th, and 6th . K-9 “Karo”
received 1st place in the Evidence Search category and received the Agitator’s Choice
Award as the hardest hitting dog.

The second competition was in Sonoma on June 26th, 27th and 28th. Karo received 1st
place in Protection, 2nd place in the Vehicle Narcotics Search and 1st place in the overall
competition.

K-9 Karo also received the Maverick Award which is presented by the sponsors of the
competition for the canine that shows the most drive based on their performance, while
still being very family oriented. The Maverick Award is named after disabled Santa Rosa
P.D. K-9 Officer “Maverick”, who was injured in the line of duty and is still held in high
regards by the agencies in the Sonoma County area for his dedication to duty and family.

Deputy Traynor has been with the Sutter County Sheriff’s Department for 6 years. Karo,
a Belgium Malinois, is 4 years old and has been with the Department K-9 Unit for
approximately one year. Karo was purchased and trained two years ago at the request of
the Live Oak City Council who wanted a K-9 assigned to their Law Enforcement Unit.
Both the dog and the training, was paid for by a Federal Grant obtained by the City of
Live Oak.
