Scam Alert – Public Awareness

Wednesday, August 21, 2013 8:32 AM

For Immediate Release:

Sutter County Sheriff’s Office is asking the community to be aware of a scam being perpetrated in the Sutter County area. The scam is initiated when residents receive a telephone call from an unidentified individual posing as a relative calling to urge them to wire money immediately. This type of scam is also done using a “third party” saying they are calling on behalf of the relative in need. In the Sutter County case, the victim was asked to send money to Mexico.

Citizens are being advised to be vigilant before sending any money, ask the person a question that only your actual family member would know the answer to and/or check with other family members to confirm the situation. Call them back at a number you know to be genuine.

Anyone with information regarding this type of fraud activity is asked to call the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 822-7307. The community is encouraged to report these incidents to their local law enforcement agency.
