For Immediate Release:
The Sutter County Sheriff’s Department conducted a Boating Under the Influence (BUI)
and Safety Inspection Checkpoint as part of a national coordinated effort for Operation
Dry Water the weekend of June 27-28, 2009.
Sheriff’s Deputies contacted and inspected 52 vessels for alcohol and various required
equipment. Out of those 52 vessels the sheriff’s department issued three citations for
unserviceable fire extinguishers, five verbal warnings for life jacket violations and one
verbal warning for a registration violation. All subjects stopped showed no signs of
alcohol abuse or intoxication. The majority of the vessel operators that were checked for
Boating Under the Influence either had not drank any alcoholic beverages or had
consumed one “beer” in the last hour with no signs of impairment.
Operation Dry Water is a joint operation including California, the National Association
of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and the U.S. Coast Guard as well as
several other law enforcement agencies.
