Did You Know?

Sutter County was incorporated by the California State Legislature on February 18, 1850, as one of the state's original 27 counties, and this year, 2009, marks 159 years that Sutter County has been in existance.

At that time Sutter County included the southwest portion of what is now Placer County and a piece of what now belongs to Colusa County. Between 1850 and 1866, the boundaries were changed to their present locations. Very early on in the growth of Sutter County, the county seat was located in the City of Auburn; however, that was quite short lived as Aurburn soon became the county seat for the newly established County of Placer.

Oro City, with only a 20 x 20 zinc building was the next site of the County seat, which soon was relocated to a slightly more accommodating Nicolaus. Prisoners had to be transported back and forth from the Yuba County Jail in Marysville because Sutter County did not have a courtroom or jail. All county and court business was held in the American Hotel in Nicolaus.

Eventually, in 1856 Sutter County voters decided to establish the County seat at its present location in Yuba City. Two years later in Yuba City, the first court house and jail were constructed for the County which also housed the County Clerk and Sheriff's Office. Believed to have been started by mice chewing on match heads left in the Clerk's office, a fire erupted in the courthouse in 1871 that destroyed many of the County's records. The Sheriff's Office, however, survived the fire.

A second fire in 1899 destroyed the courthouse and several other buildings, but again, the jail survived with only minor damage. The fire was attributed to a mental patient awaiting transfer to a Stockton asylum.

Oddly, back in the late 1800's, Yuba City was considered merely a suburb of the City of Marysville, just across the Feather River. Marysville at that time was the economic center for the region. How things have changed as Yuba City has since expanded and modernized to now become an active and significant economic and cultural influence in the region.

At the time Sutter County was incorporated, John Polo was elected as the first Sheriff for the County. Since then there have been 23 Sheriffs elected or appointed to serve and protect our community.
